As the stars of Matariki rise in the winter sky, we caught up with Danni – a photographer and māmā – to hear what this special time of year means to her and her whānau.
"For our whānau, Matariki is about connection – to each other, to the stars, and to our whenua."
Each year, Danni and her family gather at their marae to celebrate. It's a time of joy and togetherness, filled with stargazing, singing, and making fry bread – simple moments that bring everyone close.
"I hope my kids will carry on the tradition of getting together with whānau and heading to the marae for Matariki. It brings them so much joy already, so I’m sure it will always be something special for them."
Matariki also brings a sense of stillness and reflection.
"This time of year reminds me to pause – to reflect on myself, on how I’m parenting, and how we’re all growing together as a whānau."
While reflection is something Danni tries to practise every day, Matariki is a gentle nudge – a reminder to slow down, be mindful, and celebrate the journey so far.
