As we embrace the warmer months in New Zealand and Australia, where outdoor adventures are a way of life, protecting our little ones from the sun’s harsh rays becomes a top priority. One essential way to safeguard their delicate skin is through UPF-rated swimwear. But what exactly is UPF, and why should it be a key consideration when choosing swimwear for babies and kids?

What is UPF?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, a rating system used to measure the amount of UV radiation that can penetrate a fabric and reach the skin. Just like SPF is used to rate sunscreens, UPF ratings tell us how effective clothing is at blocking harmful UV rays. The higher the UPF rating, the greater the protection. A garment with a UPF of 50+ allows only 1/50th of the sun's UV radiation to pass through, offering superior protection.

Why is UPF important for kids specifically?
Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adults', and when exposed to intense sun, it can burn faster and more severely. This is especially concerning in places like New Zealand and Australia, where the UV index is among the highest in the world due to factors like the thinner ozone layer. For babies and toddlers, who have thinner, more delicate skin, prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to immediate sunburn and increase the risk of skin issues later in life.

How UPF swimwear helps:
UPF swimwear, especially full-coverage styles like rash suits, protects areas that sunscreen may miss or rub off from more easily, such as the shoulders, back, and chest. Unlike sunscreen, which needs frequent reapplication, UPF clothing provides consistent protection throughout the day without wearing off. This is especially beneficial for wriggly little ones who love to splash around in the water. Modern UPF fabrics are also lightweight and quick-drying, keeping kids cool and comfortable as they play in the sun. Crywolf's UPF swimwear styles actually feature a 4-way stretch, allowing for even greater ease of movement.

At Crywolf, we understand the importance of protecting your little adventurers while they explore the great outdoors. That’s why we design our swimwear with UPF 50+ protection, the highest rating available, to block out 98% of harmful UV rays.

Always remember:

  • Don’t forget the sunscreen! While UPF swimwear covers most of the body, make sure to continuously apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to any exposed areas, such as the face, hands, and feet.
  • Balance sun with shade: The sun is strongest between 10am and 4pm. Whenever possible, schedule outdoor play during the early morning or late afternoon, and always look for shaded areas to take breaks.
